Course Description

Explore the dynamic intersection of urban ecology, public health, and community engagement through the lens of the Chicago Rat Project. Led by Dr. Maureen Murray, Wildlife Disease Ecologist at Lincoln Park Zoo’s Urban Wildlife Institute, this course delves into the multifaceted impacts of rats on both human populations and urban wildlife. Using a One Health approach, participants will gain insights into the interconnectedness of human and environmental health, fostering a holistic understanding of urban rat management. From rat-associated diseases to the implications of rodent control, this course aims to equip participants with knowledge and recommendations for effective and sustainable rat management strategies.

Dr. Mauren Murray

 Dr. Maureen Murray is the Wildlife Disease Ecologist at Lincoln Park Zoo’s Urban Wildlife Institute. Her research uses a One Health approach to examine how living in cities can affect the health of wildlife and people through human-wildlife  interactions. She holds a PhD from the University of Alberta
on urban coyote ecology and has studied species ranging from grizzly bears to brown rats.
